After the last deglatiation, the sea level rose and covered the karsts relief up to the present area of
Hutovo Blato. Gravel carried by the Neretva River was deposited in the valley. Wetland was formed after the sea level decreased and the Neretva filled up the sunken karsts depressions with its rich sediments thus raising the level of the soil. At more distant places, where sedimentation was not so heavy, marshes and lakes remained.
In midst of these alluvial deposits, solitary hummocks of limestone rock still dominate. The karsts geomorphology combined with the alluvial plain, wetlands and cultivated land characterizes the landscape of Neretva Delta and its surrounding areas.
